Epic with 101 minutes and penalties sees MK Robins through
A long cold night in Milton Keynes saw the Saints go out of the League Challenge Cup after an epic 25 minute penalty shootout.
It finished 1-1 at full time, with an unjustified and baffling 11 minutes of added time. MK Robins equalised with virtually the last header of the game.
The Saints dominated possession and played some tidy attractive football. They took the lead with a penetrating run from Ayub Albadri and a good finish.
The Saints withheld pressure and occasional attacks from MK Robins, but strong defending and goalkeeping kept them ahead. A red card for Thiago Goncalves meant a 10 man Saints had to dig deep.
Deep into stoppage time MK Robins scored a header from a corner to make it 1-1. Penalties then ensued, which started as 4-4 out of the first five, the Saints scorers being Ray Oliveira, Bilal Ahmadzai, Dan Carr and Igli Sevaj.
Then the sudden death penalties came, and they went on forever. We lost count. Saints scorers being Ryan Molloy, Costas Mina, Aristotellis Nasai, Bilal, Igli, Demetris Anastasiou.
In the end MK Robins won, and are through to the next round. A long night, an epic game, some good football from the Saints. Onwards.
The Saints’ next game is on Wednesday 6th November in the Division One Cup, against New Salamis, at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Enfield, EN13PL.
